Those of you who know me, know that one of my greatest loves is my rescue dog, Belle. Once a Bosnian street dog, I adopted Belle with the help of Wild At Heart Foundation and she’s been at my side ever since!
Introducing The Dog Rose
Situated 30km north of Bucharest in Romania, The Dog Rose is a new kind of animal shelter that’s run by husband and wife vets Alice and Gabriel along with Alice’s dad.
The shelter aims to bring dogs and children together in a beautiful park setting within the Romanian countryside. And when we arrived, it was clear that the shelter had achieved just that… a pastel coloured dream home for dogs!
As well as the colourful pastel houses and kennels, The Dog Rose has obstacles, gardens and fields aplenty where its many residents (more on them further down!) can stretch their legs and play.
The Dog Rose is home to over 170 dogs of all shapes and sizes. Mostly living on the streets as strays, these dogs were rescued and brought to The Dog Rose where they are given all the love they could ever desire from Gabriel, Alice and her Dad.
Not only do Gabriel and Alice rescue stray dogs from around Bucharest, but they also aim to educate. In a bid to tackle the country-wide issue of stray dogs, The Dog Rose are teaching local children how to interact with stray dogs and how to report them - and have a wonderful Education Centre on site. They are also working hard to reduce the Romanian stray dog population, by neutering stray dogs in local villages.
One of our jobs during our stay (other than having lots of cuddles and games of fetch!) was to photograph many of the dogs so they could be listed for adoption. Much like my Belle, these dogs need to find a forever home otherwise The Dog Rose will run out of room! It wasn’t easy getting them to sit still…
But after lots of licked camera lenses and extra cuddles, we got there! Meet some of The Dog Rose’s four-legged residents…
And a few action shots from the dogs that just wouldn’t sit still…
After a wonderful three days spent at The Dog Rose, it was with heavy hearts that we packed our bags and said goodbye to Alice and her Dad, Gabriel, and all our new furry friends.
A huge thank you to Wild At Heart and the team at The Dog Rose for making us feel so welcome and opening our eyes to the problem of stay dogs. And thanks to the dogs for all their licks, cuddles and games of fetch!
